If I have to talk about an older person I admire, I would definitely like to tell you about my grandmother.
Personally, I think she’s such a strong and caring person because she always seems to put her family first without complaining.
I’ve known her all my life, and she lives quite close to my family, so I see her regularly.
When I was younger, I spent a lot of time at her house after school.
These days, I sometimes visit her at weekends, and we normally have lunch, talk or go for a short walk together.
At first, when I was a child, I simply thought of her as the person who cooked delicious food and gave me snacks.
But as I’ve got older, I’ve started to understand how much she’s done for the whole family.
She raised several children, worked for many years and still managed to look after everyone around her.
What impresses me is that she rarely complains about difficult experiences. Instead, she often tells me to focus on what I can do rather than what I can’t change.
We don’t always agree because we grew up in completely different generations.
But I really value her advice, especially when I’m worried about school or something that seems very important at the time.
I admire her because she’s taught me to be more patient and not take my family for granted.

Điều khiến mình ấn tượng là bà hiếm khi than phiền về những trải nghiệm khó khăn. Thay vào đó, bà thường bảo mình tập trung vào điều mình có thể làm thay vì những thứ không thể thay đổi.
Chúng mình không phải lúc nào cũng đồng ý vì lớn lên ở hai thế hệ hoàn toàn khác nhau.
Nhưng mình thực sự coi trọng lời khuyên của bà, đặc biệt khi lo lắng về việc học hoặc điều gì đó mà lúc ấy mình cho là rất quan trọng.
Mình ngưỡng mộ bà vì bà dạy mình kiên nhẫn hơn và không coi gia đình là điều hiển nhiên.

What do older people usually do in their daily lives?
SAMPLE ANSWER
It varies a lot depending on their health and whether they’ve retired. Some older people have quite active lives and spend time exercising, travelling or looking after grandchildren. Others may prefer quieter routines like gardening, cooking or meeting neighbours. I don’t think we should assume older people just stay at home. Many of them finally have more time to pursue their own interests after years of working.

Why is there sometimes a generation gap?
SAMPLE ANSWER
I think it’s mainly because different generations grow up under different circumstances. My grandparents, for example, didn’t grow up with smartphones or social media, so they may see phone use very differently from teenagers. Values can also change over time. That doesn’t mean one generation is right and the other is wrong; they simply have different experiences shaping their opinions.

Has the quality of life for older people improved?
SAMPLE ANSWER
In many ways, yes, especially because healthcare and technology have improved. Older people can stay in touch with family through video calls, and many health conditions can be managed better than in the past. But there are still problems like loneliness and the rising cost of living. So although living conditions have improved, that doesn’t automatically mean every elderly person has a happier life.

What can young and old people learn from each other?
SAMPLE ANSWER
Quite a lot, I think. Older people can share experience and help younger people see problems from a wider perspective. Young people, meanwhile, can help older relatives with new technology or introduce them to new ideas. For example, my grandparents can give me advice about relationships or difficult decisions, while I can help them use apps on their phones. So the exchange doesn’t have to be one-way.
