IELTS SPEAKING PART 2

You should say:
- Who this person is
- What you know about this person
- What this person is like in real life
- What achievement this person has made
- And explain why you admire this person
PART 2 · SAMPLE ANSWER
If I have to talk about a successful sportsperson I admire, I would definitely like to tell you about a Vietnamese football player I first knew through watching the national team.
Personally, I think he’s such an inspiring athlete because he seems hardworking and disciplined rather than someone who simply relies on talent.
I started paying attention to him a few years ago when I watched an important football match with my family.
Before that, I wasn’t particularly interested in individual players. I normally just watched big matches when everyone else in my family was watching.
However, during that game, he kept running, defending and creating chances even when his team was under pressure.
At first, I thought successful athletes were mostly people who were naturally gifted. But after watching interviews about his training, I realised how much work goes on behind the scenes.
He apparently follows a strict training routine and takes his fitness and diet very seriously.
He’s also achieved a lot with his club and the national team, which is obviously impressive.
What I admire most, though, is his strong work ethic and the way he keeps going even when things aren’t going well.
He reminds me that talent can give someone an advantage, but consistent effort is what helps people stay successful for a long time.

Discussion Questions
6 câu hỏi
1
Why do only a few athletes become top professionals?
SAMPLE ANSWER
Well, I think natural ability matters, but there are probably many other factors. Top athletes usually need to train consistently for years, deal with injuries and perform well under pressure. Lots of talented children may eventually stop because training becomes too demanding or they want to focus on education. There is also an element of opportunity. Someone could be extremely talented but never meet the right coach or have access to good facilities.
USEFUL VOCABULARY
train consistently for yearstập luyện đều đặn trong nhiều năm
perform well under pressurethi đấu tốt dưới áp lực
have access to good facilitiescó điều kiện sử dụng cơ sở vật chất tốt
2
What sports are popular in your country?
SAMPLE ANSWER
Football is probably the most obvious one, especially when the national team plays. Even people who don’t normally follow football may watch important international matches. Badminton, swimming and running are also quite common because they’re relatively easy to take up as a hobby. I think the popularity of a sport also changes when a national athlete performs particularly well because that can inspire more young people to try it.
USEFUL VOCABULARY
take up a sport as a hobbybắt đầu chơi một môn thể thao như sở thích
international matchescác trận đấu quốc tế
inspire someone to try somethingtruyền cảm hứng cho ai thử điều gì
3
How can we identify children who are talented at sports?
SAMPLE ANSWER
Hmm, I’m not sure it should only be based on who wins competitions at a young age. Some children develop physically later than others, so a child who isn’t outstanding at ten might become excellent a few years later. Coaches probably need to look at things like coordination, speed, attitude and willingness to learn. I think giving lots of children opportunities to try different sports is better than deciding too early who is talented and who isn’t.
USEFUL VOCABULARY
willingness to learnsự sẵn sàng học hỏi
develop physicallyphát triển về thể chất
give someone opportunitiestạo cơ hội cho ai
4
How important is talent in sport?
SAMPLE ANSWER
I suppose it’s important, especially at the highest level, because some physical abilities are difficult to create through training alone. But talent without effort probably doesn’t take someone very far. A naturally talented athlete who rarely trains may eventually be overtaken by someone who is slightly less gifted but works much harder. So I’d see talent as a starting advantage rather than a guarantee of success.
USEFUL VOCABULARY
work much hardernỗ lực nhiều hơn rất nhiều
a starting advantagelợi thế ban đầu
a guarantee of successsự đảm bảo cho thành công
5
What qualities does a successful athlete need?
SAMPLE ANSWER
Apart from physical ability, I’d say discipline and mental toughness are extremely important. Athletes lose matches, get injured and sometimes perform badly even after months of preparation. If they can’t recover mentally from those situations, it may be difficult to continue. They also need patience because improvement doesn’t happen overnight. So successful athletes probably need to be emotionally strong as well as physically fit.
USEFUL VOCABULARY
mental toughnesssự mạnh mẽ về tinh thần
recover mentallyphục hồi về mặt tinh thần
doesn’t happen overnightkhông thể xảy ra ngay lập tức
6
Should schools spend more time on PE and sports?
SAMPLE ANSWER
I think they should make sure students get enough physical activity, but I wouldn’t necessarily reduce important academic subjects too much. Students spend hours sitting in classrooms, so exercise can help them stay physically active and even concentrate better afterwards. However, not every student enjoys competitive sports. Schools could offer more choices, such as swimming, dancing or simple fitness activities, instead of assuming everyone wants to play football or basketball.
USEFUL VOCABULARY
stay physically activeduy trì vận động thể chất
competitive sportsthể thao mang tính thi đấu
offer more choicescung cấp nhiều lựa chọn hơn
