IELTS SPEAKING PART 2
Describe an occasion when you lost something in public.
You should say:
- What you lost
- When and where you lost it
- What you did to find it
- And explain how you felt about it
PART 2 · SAMPLE ANSWER
If I have to talk about an occasion when I lost something in public, I would definitely like to tell you about the time I lost my phone.
Personally, I think it was such a terrible experience because my phone contained a lot of important photos and personal information.
It happened about two months ago when I went to a shopping mall with a few of my close friends. We had lunch, did some shopping and then stopped at a coffee shop before going home.
I was in a really good mood, but when we were about to leave the mall, I suddenly realized that my phone wasn’t in my pocket. I immediately started to panic.
At first, I thought someone had stolen it, but it turned out that I’d simply left it on a table in the coffee shop.
So my friends and I rushed back there. When we arrived, the phone was no longer on the table, which made me even more worried. Luckily, someone had found it and handed it in to a member of staff.
I was extremely relieved when I got it back because I’d honestly thought I’d lost it for good.
Since then, I’ve become much more careful with my belongings, and I always double-check that I have my phone and wallet before leaving a place.

Discussion Questions
6 câu hỏi
1
What do people often feel after losing things?
SAMPLE ANSWER
Well, I guess it depends on what they’ve lost. If it’s something small like a pen, they probably won’t care much. But if it’s a phone or wallet, they may panic because those things contain money or personal information. For example, if I lost my phone, I’d be more worried about my photos and accounts than the phone itself. So the emotional reaction really depends on how important the item is.
USEFUL VOCABULARY
depend on what they’ve lostphụ thuộc vào thứ họ làm mất
personal informationthông tin cá nhân
emotional reactionphản ứng cảm xúc
2
What can people do to reduce the possibility of losing things?
SAMPLE ANSWER
Hmm, I haven’t really thought about this before, but I suppose people could keep important things in the same place. For example, I always put my phone in one pocket and my keys in another, so I notice quite quickly if something is missing. People can also double-check their belongings before leaving a restaurant, taxi or classroom. It sounds simple, but I think small habits like that can make a big difference.
USEFUL VOCABULARY
keep important things in the same placeluôn để đồ quan trọng ở cùng một vị trí
double-check your belongingskiểm tra kỹ lại đồ đạc
make a big differencetạo ra sự khác biệt lớn
3
What kinds of people may lose things often?
SAMPLE ANSWER
That’s quite difficult to say because I don’t think there’s one particular type of person. Maybe people who are absent-minded tend to lose things more often, but it can also happen when someone is in a hurry or has too many things on their mind. For example, when I’m late for school, I sometimes put my keys somewhere and completely forget where they are five minutes later. So I think the situation matters as much as the person’s personality.

in a hurryđang vội
have too many things on your mindcó quá nhiều thứ phải suy nghĩ
4
Is it effective to offer rewards to find lost things?
SAMPLE ANSWER
I’ve never really thought about that, but I guess it depends on the situation. If you’ve lost something valuable, like a laptop or a bag containing important documents, a reward might motivate people to return it. But if it’s something small, I don’t think a reward is necessary. Also, many people would return a phone or wallet simply because they know how stressful it would be if they lost their own. So rewards can help, but they aren’t always needed.

5
What do people usually do when they lose something?
SAMPLE ANSWER
I suppose the first thing most people do is retrace their steps and check the places they’ve just been to. If that doesn’t work, they might ask the staff or security guards for help. With phones, it’s a bit different because people can sometimes track the device using another phone or computer. For example, if I left my phone in a taxi, I’d probably try to locate it first and then contact the driver.
USEFUL VOCABULARY
retrace your stepsquay lại những nơi mình vừa đi qua để tìm
track a deviceđịnh vị thiết bị
locate somethingxác định vị trí của thứ gì
6
What kinds of things do people usually lose?
SAMPLE ANSWER
Let me think… probably small things that people carry around every day, like keys, earphones, cards and phones. We take these things out and put them back so often that it’s easy to forget them somewhere. Small objects are also easy to misplace because they can fall under a seat or get left in a pocket. I personally lose pens all the time at school, although luckily they’re not very valuable.
USEFUL VOCABULARY
carry something aroundmang theo bên mình
easy to misplacedễ để nhầm chỗ/thất lạc
