IELTS SPEAKING PART 2
Describe a time when you gave advice to someone
You should say:
- When it happened
- Who you gave advice to
- What advice you gave
- And explain why you gave this advice
PART 2 · SAMPLE ANSWER
If I have to talk about a time I gave someone advice, I would definitely like to tell you about helping one of my friends before an important exam.
Personally, I think it was quite meaningful because she was studying extremely hard, but the way she was studying was actually making things worse.
It happened last year, just a few days before our final exams.
She told me she was planning to stay up until two or three in the morning every night because she still had a huge amount to revise.
At first, I didn’t want to interfere because everyone has their own way of studying.
But she looked exhausted and told me she could barely remember what she’d studied the night before.
So I suggested that she stop trying to cover everything at once.
Instead, I told her to identify the most important topics, focus properly on those and get enough sleep.
I also suggested putting her phone in another room because she kept checking messages while studying.
At first, she wasn’t convinced.
She said going to bed early would make her feel guilty because everyone else was still studying.
But she eventually followed my advice for one night.
The next day, she told me she’d been able to concentrate much better and actually remembered more.
I was really glad because my advice hadn’t magically solved her exam stress, but it had helped her look at the problem from a different perspective.

Discussion Questions
6 câu hỏi
1
Do older people ask younger people for advice?
SAMPLE ANSWER
Yeah, definitely, especially about technology. My parents sometimes ask younger family members how to use an app or fix a problem with their phones. But I think advice can go both ways. Younger people may know more about new technology, while older people usually have more life experience.
USEFUL VOCABULARY
go both waysdiễn ra theo cả hai chiều
life experiencekinh nghiệm sống
fix a problemkhắc phục vấn đề
2
Do people prefer advice from friends or parents?
SAMPLE ANSWER
It depends on what the problem is. If a teenager has an argument with a friend, they may talk to another friend because that person understands the situation better. But for decisions about university or money, parents may have more useful experience. Personally, I’d probably listen to different opinions rather than rely completely on one person.
USEFUL VOCABULARY
listen to different opinionslắng nghe những ý kiến khác nhau
rely completely on someonehoàn toàn dựa vào ai
useful experiencekinh nghiệm hữu ích
3
Can receiving too much advice be a problem?
SAMPLE ANSWER
Oh, definitely. Imagine asking five people whether you should change schools and getting five completely different answers. You might end up more confused than you were before. Too much advice can also make people doubt their own judgement. So at some point, you have to listen to yourself and make the final decision.
USEFUL VOCABULARY
doubt your own judgementnghi ngờ khả năng đánh giá của bản thân
end up more confusedcuối cùng càng bối rối hơn
make the final decisionđưa ra quyết định cuối cùng
4
What kind of person is good at giving advice?
SAMPLE ANSWER
I think a good adviser listens carefully before saying anything. Some people immediately tell you what they would do, but your situation may be completely different from theirs. A good adviser should help you weigh up your options rather than simply tell you what to do. They should also be honest when they don’t know enough about something.
USEFUL VOCABULARY
weigh up your optionscân nhắc các lựa chọn
good adviserngười đưa lời khuyên tốt
be honest about somethingthành thật về điều gì
5
Is advice from strangers online useful?
SAMPLE ANSWER
Sometimes. One advantage is that you can find people who’ve been through a similar situation, so their experience may be useful. But there’s no guarantee that someone online actually knows what they’re talking about. For everyday problems, I might read people’s opinions, but for health, legal or financial decisions, I’d look for a reliable professional source.
USEFUL VOCABULARY
go through a similar situationtrải qua tình huống tương tự
know what you’re talking aboutthực sự hiểu điều mình đang nói
reliable professional sourcenguồn chuyên môn đáng tin cậy
6
Should people prepare before giving advice?
SAMPLE ANSWER
If it’s a serious issue, yes. Sometimes the best thing you can say is, “I’m not really sure.” Giving confident advice about something you don’t understand can make the situation worse. I think people should get the full picture first by asking questions before suggesting a solution.
USEFUL VOCABULARY
get the full picturehiểu đầy đủ toàn bộ tình hình
make the situation worsekhiến tình hình tệ hơn
suggest a solutionđề xuất giải pháp
