IELTS SPEAKING PART 2
Describe a time when you changed an important decision of yours.
You should say:
- When it happened
- What your original decision was
- Why you changed it
- And explain how you felt afterwards
PART 2 · SAMPLE ANSWER
If I have to talk about a time when I changed an important decision, I would definitely like to tell you about changing my choice of an extra class.
Personally, I think it was quite an important decision because I was going to spend a lot of time studying there for several months.
It happened last year when I was looking for an English class to improve my speaking.
At first, I chose a large class because several of my friends were studying there and I thought it would be more fun if we were together.
However, after attending two lessons, I realised that the class wasn’t really suitable for me. There were too many students, so I barely had a chance to speak.
At first, I was reluctant to leave because I didn’t want my friends to think I was being difficult.
But then I thought about why I’d joined the class in the first place. My main goal was to improve my speaking, not just spend time with my friends.
So I decided to change my mind and join a smaller class instead.
It turned out to be a good decision because I had much more speaking practice and the teacher could give me more individual feedback.
I felt slightly nervous at first, but later I was really glad I’d made the choice based on my own needs rather than simply following my friends.

Discussion Questions

1
When should children start making their own decisions?
SAMPLE ANSWER
I think they should start with small decisions quite early. Young children can choose things like what clothes to wear or which book to read, while bigger decisions should still involve parents. As they get older, they can take on more responsibility. For example, teenagers should probably have some say in which subjects they study because those choices can affect their future. But parents can still give advice rather than making every decision for them.
USEFUL VOCABULARY
take on more responsibilityđảm nhận nhiều trách nhiệm hơn
have some say in somethingcó tiếng nói trong việc gì
2
Why do people sometimes change important decisions?
SAMPLE ANSWER
There can be lots of reasons. Sometimes they receive new information, or the situation changes after they’ve already made the decision. For example, someone may plan to study abroad but then realise the cost is much higher than expected. Changing a decision doesn’t always mean the first choice was wrong; it may simply mean the person is responding to new circumstances.
USEFUL VOCABULARY
receive new informationnhận được thông tin mới
respond to new circumstancesđiều chỉnh theo hoàn cảnh mới
higher than expectedcao hơn dự kiến
3
Is it bad to change your mind often?
SAMPLE ANSWER
It depends. If someone changes their mind every five minutes because they’re afraid of making any choice, that can make life difficult. But being too stubborn can be just as bad. If new evidence shows that your original decision isn’t working, I think it’s sensible to reconsider your choice. So changing your mind isn’t necessarily weakness; sometimes it shows flexibility.
USEFUL VOCABULARY
reconsider your choicexem xét lại lựa chọn
be too stubbornquá cứng đầu
show flexibilitythể hiện sự linh hoạt
