If I have to talk about someone who loves growing plants, I would definitely like to tell you about my grandmother.
Personally, I think she’s such a patient person because she can spend a lot of time looking after her plants without getting bored.
She has a small garden behind her house, where she grows vegetables, herbs and several kinds of flowers.
I started noticing her interest in gardening when I was younger because whenever I visited her, she was usually watering something or checking whether the plants were growing well.
At first, I thought gardening was quite boring. I couldn’t understand why someone would spend months growing vegetables when they could simply buy them at a market.
But it turned out that the vegetables weren’t really the main reason she did it.
For her, gardening is a way to keep herself busy and spend time outdoors.
She also gets really excited when a plant starts producing fruit or flowers because she feels that all her effort has paid off.
Sometimes she gives vegetables to neighbours or family members, which makes her even happier.
Watching her has actually changed my opinion of gardening.
I still don’t think I’d spend hours doing it myself, but I can understand why she finds it so relaxing and rewarding.

Should students learn how to grow plants?
SAMPLE ANSWER
Yeah, I think they should, although it doesn’t need to become a serious school subject. Growing something simple, like tomatoes or herbs, can help children understand where food actually comes from. They also have to water the plants regularly and wait for them to grow, so it can teach them patience and responsibility. I think that’s more memorable than simply reading a chapter about plants in a textbook.

Is growing your own fruit and vegetables better than buying them?
SAMPLE ANSWER
Hmm, not necessarily. Home-grown vegetables can be fresher, and people know exactly how they’ve been grown, which is a big advantage. But growing enough food for a family takes space, time and quite a lot of effort. For someone living in an apartment, it may simply not be practical. So I’d see it as a healthy hobby rather than a complete replacement for buying food.

Why do some people enjoy growing plants?
SAMPLE ANSWER
I guess one reason is that it’s a very different kind of activity from what people normally do nowadays. A lot of us spend hours looking at screens and expect everything immediately, whereas plants grow slowly. Looking after them can help people slow down and switch off for a while. And when something you’ve cared for finally flowers, there’s a real sense of achievement.

Is it easy to grow plants at home?
SAMPLE ANSWER
It depends on what you’re trying to grow. Some plants only need a little sunlight and regular watering, so even beginners can manage them. Others are much more sensitive to temperature, soil or water. I once tried looking after a small plant and actually killed it by watering it too much, so I definitely wouldn’t say it’s always easy. Beginners should probably start with low-maintenance plants.
