PART 2 · SAMPLE ANSWER
If I have to talk about a time when someone discussed something I wasn’t interested in but I kept listening, I would definitely like to tell you about a conversation with one of my relatives.
Personally, I think it was quite a challenging situation because he talked for a really long time about cars, which is a topic I know almost nothing about.
It happened at a family gathering a few months ago. I was sitting next to my uncle, and somehow the conversation moved onto cars.
He started explaining different engines, models and why he wanted to buy a new car.
At first, I tried to follow what he was saying, but after about ten minutes, I was completely lost. I honestly didn’t understand half of the technical terms he was using.
I thought about changing the subject, but I could tell he was really passionate about it, so I didn’t want to seem rude.
Instead, I kept listening and asked a few simple questions whenever I could.
Interestingly, after a while, he started talking about a long road trip he’d taken when he was younger. That part was much easier for me to relate to.
So although the original topic wasn’t interesting to me, the conversation eventually turned into something more personal.
I felt slightly bored at first, but I was glad I kept listening because I learned something new about him and realised that sometimes listening is more about showing respect to the other person than being interested in the topic itself.

Mình từng nghĩ đến việc đổi chủ đề, nhưng mình có thể thấy chú thực sự đam mê nó nên không muốn tỏ ra bất lịch sự.
Thay vào đó, mình tiếp tục nghe và hỏi vài câu đơn giản khi có thể.
Điều thú vị là sau một lúc, chú bắt đầu kể về một chuyến đi đường dài khi còn trẻ. Phần đó dễ để mình đồng cảm hơn nhiều.
Vì vậy, mặc dù chủ đề ban đầu không thú vị với mình, cuộc trò chuyện cuối cùng lại trở nên cá nhân hơn.

How can you tell if someone is really listening to you?
SAMPLE ANSWER
Well, I think body language gives you a lot of clues. If someone makes eye contact, responds to what you’re saying and asks relevant questions, they’re probably paying attention. On the other hand, if they’re constantly checking their phone and just saying “yeah” every few seconds, it can feel like they’re not really listening. Of course, some people don’t make much eye contact even when they’re focused, so I wouldn’t judge based on just one sign.

What can happen if people don’t listen properly?
SAMPLE ANSWER
I think it can cause misunderstandings and unnecessary arguments. For example, if a student doesn’t listen carefully to instructions, they may do an assignment incorrectly and then blame the teacher. In relationships, poor listening can also make people feel that their opinions don’t matter. So even a small communication problem can become much bigger if people keep talking without really listening to each other.

Hmm, it probably depends on the group, but among teenagers I’d say school, friends, entertainment and social media come up quite often. If there’s a popular film, game or piece of news, people may talk about it because everyone knows something about it. Young people also talk about their future, especially when exams or university choices are getting closer. In my experience, the topic changes really quickly when a group of friends is chatting.

Is being a good listener an important skill?
SAMPLE ANSWER
Yeah, definitely, especially because people often focus so much on expressing their own opinions. A good listener can make other people feel understood, which is important in friendships, families and even at work. For example, if a friend is upset, they may not actually want advice; sometimes they just want someone to listen without interrupting. So I think listening is a skill people sometimes underestimate.
