If I have to talk about someone I only met once recently and want to know more about, I would definitely like to tell you about a university student I met at a coffee shop.
Personally, I think she’s such an interesting person because she has a really positive attitude and is easy to talk to.
I met her about three weeks ago when I was studying at a coffee shop after school. She was working on her laptop at the next table.
At first, I didn’t pay much attention to her because I was busy finishing my homework. After a while, my laptop ran out of battery, and I realized I’d forgotten my charger.
She noticed that I looked worried and offered to lend me her charger without me even asking.
At first, I thought she was just being polite, but it turned out that she was genuinely friendly. We ended up talking for about twenty minutes. She told me she was studying architecture and loved travelling around Vietnam.
I want to know more about her because we seem to have a lot in common, especially our interest in languages and travelling.
Although we only met once, she left a really good impression on me, and I hope I’ll run into her again someday.

Nếu phải nói về một người mình mới gặp một lần gần đây nhưng muốn tìm hiểu thêm, mình muốn kể về một chị sinh viên mình gặp ở quán cà phê.
Mình thấy chị ấy là một người thú vị vì có thái độ rất tích cực và dễ nói chuyện.
Mình gặp chị ấy khoảng ba tuần trước khi đang học ở một quán cà phê sau giờ học. Chị ấy làm việc trên laptop ở bàn bên cạnh.
Ban đầu mình không để ý nhiều vì đang bận làm bài. Một lúc sau laptop của mình hết pin và mình nhận ra đã quên sạc.
Chị ấy thấy mình lo lắng nên chủ động cho mình mượn sạc dù mình còn chưa hỏi.
Ban đầu mình nghĩ chị ấy chỉ lịch sự thôi, nhưng hóa ra chị ấy thực sự rất thân thiện. Chúng mình nói chuyện khoảng hai mươi phút. Chị kể rằng đang học kiến trúc và rất thích đi du lịch quanh Việt Nam.
Mình muốn biết thêm về chị ấy vì hai người dường như có khá nhiều điểm chung, đặc biệt là sở thích học ngoại ngữ và du lịch.
Mặc dù chỉ gặp một lần, chị ấy để lại ấn tượng rất tốt với mình và mình hy vọng một ngày nào đó sẽ tình cờ gặp lại.

Are there any topics people should avoid when meeting someone for the first time?
SAMPLE ANSWER
Yeah, I think so. Personally, I’d stay away from very personal topics, like someone’s salary, family problems or relationships, because you don’t know how comfortable they are talking about them. For example, asking a close friend how much they earn might be okay, but asking someone you’ve just met could make the situation really awkward. So I think it’s safer to start with things like school, work, hobbies or travel and get to know them gradually.

Are first impressions important?
SAMPLE ANSWER
Well, I’d say they’re important to some extent because they affect whether we want to continue talking to someone. If a person smiles, makes eye contact and is easy to talk to, we’re probably more comfortable around them. Having said that, first impressions can be misleading. Someone might seem unfriendly simply because they’re shy or having a bad day. So I try not to judge people too quickly after just one meeting.

What makes someone a true friend?
SAMPLE ANSWER
That’s quite a big question. For me, a true friend is someone you can rely on when things aren’t going well, not just someone you have fun with. For example, if I get a bad exam result, a good friend might listen to me and try to cheer me up instead of making fun of me. I also think true friends can disagree with each other but still respect each other’s opinions. So it’s probably more about trust than having exactly the same personality.

Do friends need to have the same hobbies?
SAMPLE ANSWER
Not necessarily. Having something in common definitely makes it easier to get along with each other because you have things to talk about or do together. But I don’t think friends need to like everything the same. For example, one of my friends loves football while I’m not really into it, but we both enjoy watching movies and talking about school. Actually, different interests can sometimes make a friendship more interesting.

When do people usually make new friends?
SAMPLE ANSWER
Let me think… I guess it’s often when people enter a new environment, like starting at a new school, joining a club or beginning a new job. In those situations, people naturally spend time together and have something in common. For example, when students start high school, they may not know anyone in their new class, but after working on group projects or having lunch together, they gradually become friends.

How do young people make friends nowadays?
SAMPLE ANSWER
Well, school is probably still the main place, but social media definitely plays a big role nowadays. Young people can meet others through games, Facebook or other online communities, especially if they share the same interests. But I think online friendship is a little different because you don’t always know what someone is really like. So personally, I’d still prefer to meet someone face to face before considering them a close friend.
