If I have to talk about a gift I’d like to buy for a friend, I would definitely like to tell you about a pair of wireless earphones I’d like to buy for one of my closest friends.
Personally, I think it would be such a useful gift because she loves listening to music and uses her phone a lot.
We’ve known each other since secondary school, so we’ve been friends for about five years. We study together quite often and sometimes hang out at weekends.
Her birthday is coming up soon, and I’ve been thinking about what to get her. At first, I thought about buying her some clothes, but I wasn’t sure about her size or whether she’d like my choice.
Then I remembered that her old earphones had stopped working recently. So I thought a new pair would be much more practical.
I’d probably choose a simple pair with good sound quality that isn’t too expensive. Since I’m still a student, I can’t really afford anything too fancy.
I think she’d appreciate it because it’s something she could use on a daily basis. More importantly, it would show that I’d actually paid attention to what she needed.
I’d be really happy if she liked it because, for me, it’s the thought that counts.

SAMPLE ANSWER
Hmm, I’m not really sure because I don’t know much about traditional beliefs. I guess it depends on the culture because something that seems completely normal in one country might have a negative meaning somewhere else. Older people may also care about these traditions more than teenagers do. Personally, if I received a gift from a close friend, I probably wouldn’t worry about whether it was lucky or unlucky because I’d care more about the reason they chose it for me.

What should people consider when choosing a gift?
SAMPLE ANSWER
Well, I’d say the person’s interests are probably the most important thing. If you know someone well, you can choose something that suits them instead of just buying something expensive. For example, if my friend loves reading, I’d rather buy her a book by her favourite author than an expensive perfume she might never use. I also think people’s budget matters, especially for students who don’t have much money. So a good gift should be thoughtful rather than expensive.

Why do people give money or gifts during traditional festivals?

I’ve never really thought about why, but I suppose it’s mainly a way to show love and good wishes. In many families, giving something isn’t really about its value; it’s more about showing that you care about the other person. For example, adults might give children money during a festival and tell them to study well or stay healthy. So I think gifts can also strengthen family relationships and make special occasions feel more meaningful.

Do expensive gifts mean more than cheap ones?

Hmm, I think it really depends. For a very special occasion like a wedding, people might choose a more expensive gift because they want to mark the occasion. But in everyday life, I don’t think price tells you how much someone cares. If my best friend remembers that I mentioned wanting a particular book and buys it for me, I’d probably appreciate it more than an expensive gift I don’t need. So for me, the thought behind the gift matters more than the price.

Why is choosing a gift sometimes difficult?

Oh, I actually find it quite difficult, especially when I don’t know the person very well. You want to pick something they’ll genuinely like, but you may not know their taste, what they already own or how much you should spend. For example, buying clothes can be risky because you might choose the wrong size or style. That’s why I think buying for a close friend is much easier because you usually know what they’re interested in.

On what occasions do people usually give gifts?
SAMPLE ANSWER
Well, birthdays and weddings are probably the most obvious ones, but there are lots of other situations. People might give gifts at graduations, anniversaries or during traditional festivals. Sometimes people also give small presents just to show their appreciation, like giving a teacher a card at the end of a course. Actually, I think gifts given for no particular reason can sometimes feel even more special because you aren’t expecting anything.
