IELTS SPEAKING PART 2
Describe a person who taught you a new skill.
You should say:
- Who the person is
- What skill they taught you
- How you learned it
- And explain how you felt about this person
PART 2 · SAMPLE ANSWER
If I have to talk about a person who taught me a new skill, I would definitely like to tell you about my older brother, who taught me how to cook a simple meal.
Personally, I think he’s such a patient person because he never made me feel embarrassed when I made mistakes.
It happened last summer when my parents were quite busy, so my brother and I had to prepare lunch by ourselves sometimes.
At first, I thought cooking would be easy because I’d watched my mother do it hundreds of times. But when I actually tried it myself, I realized there were lots of little things I didn’t know.
My brother first showed me how to prepare the ingredients and then taught me how to make fried rice. Instead of doing everything for me, he let me have a go at it and only stepped in when I needed help.
I remember putting too much salt in the first time. I thought we’d have to throw the whole thing away, but he showed me how to fix the problem by adding more rice and vegetables.
After practising a few times, I could finally make it by myself.
I felt really proud because it was the first proper dish I’d learned to cook. I was also grateful to my brother because he was patient and gave me the confidence to keep trying.

Discussion Questions
6 câu hỏi
1
Is self-discipline important when learning a new skill?
SAMPLE ANSWER
Yeah, definitely. I think self-discipline plays a big role because learning most skills takes time, and people usually don’t improve immediately. For example, if someone wants to learn guitar, practising for three hours once a month probably won’t help much. They need to practise regularly even on days when they don’t really feel like it. So talent may give someone a good start, but discipline is probably what helps them keep improving.
USEFUL VOCABULARY
self-discipline plays a big roletính kỷ luật đóng vai trò lớn
practise regularlyluyện tập đều đặn
give someone a good starttạo cho ai một khởi đầu thuận lợi
2
Is it better to learn from a teacher or by yourself?
SAMPLE ANSWER
Hmm, I think it depends on the skill. If it’s something quite complicated or dangerous, I’d rather learn from someone experienced because they can correct mistakes before they become habits. But for simpler things, like basic photo editing, people can probably learn by watching videos online. Personally, I usually start by myself, but if I get stuck, I’d prefer to ask someone for help.
USEFUL VOCABULARY
learn from someone experiencedhọc từ người có kinh nghiệm
become a habittrở thành thói quen
get stuckgặp khó khăn và không biết tiếp tục thế nào
3
Why do adults continue to learn new skills?
SAMPLE ANSWER
Well, there are probably different reasons. Some adults need to keep up with changes at work, especially because technology develops so quickly. Others learn things simply because they enjoy them or want to try something different. For example, my parents’ generation didn’t grow up using smartphones, but many of them have had to learn online banking and video calls. So learning doesn’t really stop when people leave school.
USEFUL VOCABULARY
keep up with changestheo kịp những thay đổi
grow up using somethinglớn lên trong môi trường sử dụng thứ gì
online bankingngân hàng trực tuyến
4
What skills should parents teach their children?
SAMPLE ANSWER
That’s quite a broad question, but I think basic life skills are really important. Things like cooking, managing money, cleaning and communicating politely may sound simple, but children will need them when they become independent. For example, a teenager who gets good grades but doesn’t know how to prepare a basic meal may still struggle when they move away from home. So I think parents should teach practical skills as well as focus on academic results.
USEFUL VOCABULARY
basic life skillskỹ năng sống cơ bản
become independenttrở nên tự lập
move away from homerời nhà để sống ở nơi khác
5
Where do children usually learn new skills?
SAMPLE ANSWER
I suppose they learn them from lots of different places. Parents teach everyday skills, while teachers usually focus more on academic or school-related ones. These days, children also pick up skills online through videos, games and social media. For example, a child might learn drawing techniques from YouTube without ever taking a formal class. So compared with the past, there are probably many more ways to learn now.
USEFUL VOCABULARY
pick up skillshọc được kỹ năng một cách tự nhiên
drawing techniqueskỹ thuật vẽ
formal classlớp học chính thức
6
Why is it important for children to learn different skills?
SAMPLE ANSWER
Well, I think different skills help children become more independent and confident. School subjects are important, but children also need to learn how to solve problems, communicate and take care of themselves. They may also discover what they’re good at by trying different activities. For example, a child may never know they enjoy cooking or playing an instrument until someone gives them the chance to try.
USEFUL VOCABULARY
become more independent and confidenttrở nên tự lập và tự tin hơn
solve problemsgiải quyết vấn đề
discover what they’re good atkhám phá điều mình giỏi
